Jesus the Prophet by John Clevely
Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. 3 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, 4 having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.
I have been reading about C S Lewis recently. I love his books and have been interested in his life story. Walter Hooper heard about C S Lewis back in the 1950s and on the strength of it went out and bought his books. Then he wrote to him and received an invitation to come over to the UK and meet him. He did and his life was changed as a result. Do you notice the three elements hear, heard about, read about and then met. Many people go through a similar process when it comes to Jesus Christ. They hear about him, then read about him, but then they go on to meet him, and their lives are changed. Actually this process reflects three ways in which God makes himself known:
Christian Preaching: Testimony, gossip, church services
The Scriptures: the Word of God
Jesus Christ: Jesus the Messiah, Son of God and Saviour of the World.
Last week Joseph began a series of preaching on the person of Jesus by focusing on Jesus is Lord! Everyone who is truly born of God confesses Jesus is Lord. No one can be a Christian unless Jesus is Lord. Self-centred people become Christ centred. Jesus becomes number one.
Today I want to speak to you about Jesus the Prophet. Christ means anointed and in the OT three types of people had oil poured on them at the outset of their ministry: Prophets, priests and Kings. Jesus was supremely anointed in all of these roles, but today we focus just on the prophetic.
Jesus: supremely anointed to speak forth the revelation of God. If you want to know what God is like you must look at Jesus. He reveals things hidden.
God has Spoken through his Son
Muslims like to share that the revelation of God is contained in the Koran and that it is ETERNAL, SENT DOWN, COMPLETE and UNCHANGED – however at the end of the day what you have is a book. Jesus Christ however is Eternal, sent down, complete and unchanged. He is eh true revelation and is personal, powerful and able to save.
Only God can make God known… For who knows a person’s thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God. 13 And we impart this tin words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit,
Paul says he is the image of the invisible God Col 1:16
Jesus himself says, no one knows the Father but the Son Mt 11:27
The prophet does bear his own words but the word of God. Jesus however is different from every other Prophet as he bears and is the Word of God. He speaks but he is the message. I I AM…
You have heard it said but I say unto you
No one ever spoke like this man
God has saved. This one speaks a better word, a word of salvation. He died he rose he sat down. The sacrifice is complete. He speaks louder than our sins. He speaks and listening to his voice new life the dead receive….
He announces what he has done. Good news! The gospel is not about the future but the past and the future. Salvation is full and sure.
He will build his church
He will make all things well: He made purification and sat down
Why is he sitting? Prophetic sitting! Psa 2 nations rage, he laughs.
He sends– Go!
Lovely to celebrate again the God who has spoken, saved and sustained, but we have to act on his commands to go. He is sending us with a message no one else has. We are commissioned and with this comes responsibility.
10000 people are waiting for us: In twos Mk 6:7ff
Go together c 7
Go with focus and without worries
Go friendly and to share
Go as far as people are happy to go
Go with expectation

That is the conversation we aim to have with as many people as possible:
Would you like to ask anything?
Is there anything we can pray for you?
Let them steer the conversation, who knows what is on their hearts? Not an occasion for argument or prolonged discussion, so no need to worry, but if there are people with genuine questions and you feel able to answer, do. Or invite them to meet a pastor/elder or come to an alpha, and take their names, make a note and hand in your record of what happened.
